Disney is now casting Irish-looking actors for an ambitious new feature film based on one of the best selling teen books of the last ten years. The movie is based on Artemis Fowl, the incredible teen drama series that started in 2001. Casting calls are being held in big cities around the U.S. from May 24th – May 26th along with online submissions. Filming will begin this summer.

Artemis Fowl is a series of eight science fiction fantasy novels written by Irish author Eoin Colfer. The series has received very positive reviews and huge sales since the first book was published in 2001. The last edition was published in 2012 giving the series a dramatic and satisfying conclusion.
The books are about a teenage genius named Artemis. In the first book he captures a Fairy named Holly Short and holds her ransom in order to exploit the magical Fairy People and restore his family’s stolen fortune. He is generally seen as an anti-hero early on, but adapts as he matures and experiences different conflicts. The series has tons of potential to develop into a Harry Potter-type movie franchise if put in the right hands. Walt Disney Pictures announced that the Artemis Fowl film would cover the events of the first and second novels of the series and it would be produced by Disney and The Weinstein Company. The screenplay is developed by Michael Goldenberg (Peter Pan, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal signed onto the project as executive producers. Variety also reported that Kenneth Branagh will direct the film with Irish playwright Conor McPherson as screenwriter.
